Cynthia King Schueler, 87, passed away peacefully at her home in Fairfield, CT on January 21, 2024, surrounded by her loving family including her husband of 65 years, Louis O. Schueler. Born in New Bedford, MA on April 26, 1936, to the late Olive and Andrew King, she grew up in Padanaram Village, located in South Dartmouth, MA. She was the middle of three daughters and was predeceased by her sisters Priscilla Gray and Martha Martin.
Cynthia graduated from Wheelock College and spent the early part of her career as a teacher. She also created and directed the Artist Craftsman Show & Sale of Fairfield County, highlighting and promoting young local artists for 7 years. Later, she became the Director of Volunteers for the Easter Seals Rehabilitation Center of Eastern Fairfield County. She also worked extensively as a volunteer, acting as Chair of the School Volunteer Association of Bridgeport, and doing public relations work on behalf of the Near and Far Aid Association, Community Sailing of Fairfield, the Junior League of Eastern Fairfield County, and the School Volunteer Association of Bridgeport. Over the course of her career, Cynthia continued her studies in Graphic/Advertising Design, Interior Design, and the Culinary Arts.
One of Cynthia’s greatest passions was entertaining family and friends. She was an extraordinary cook and baker and loved to bring people into her home to celebrate any and all occasions. She was also an avid gardener and spent hours designing, planting, and maintaining her beautiful gardens. In addition, Cynthia found great joy and fulfillment in traveling, photography, the theater, and family vacations on Martha’s Vineyard.
Cynthia was the loving mother of three daughters and sons-in-law. Jennifer and Jim de Winter of Rye, NY, Sophia Schueler and Ben Hughes of Sherborn, MA, and Stephanie and John Donnelly of Framingham, MA. Cynthia’s five Grandchildren; Alexandra de Winter Blum and her husband Andrew Blum, Eric de Winter, Jack Donnelly, Grace Donnelly, and Amari Hughes were the pride, and joy of her life. She was dedicated to her family and entirely devoted to her grandchildren. In addition to her family, she is survived by her sister-in-law and her husband, Barbara and Joseph Marshall, and many nieces and nephews. Cynthia’s family will be forever grateful for the love and outstanding care she received from her Caregivers and the team at Hartford HealthCare Hospice.
A private celebration of Cynthia’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association in her honor.
