Thomas E. Murphy, Jr.

Thomas E. Murphy, Jr., age 80, of Fairfield, beloved husband of Frances (DeVito) Murphy, passed away peacefully Friday, October 3, 2025 at Yale New Haven Hospital surrounded by Fran and their loving son TJ. Born in Bridgeport, the son of the late Thomas E. and Marion Murphy, he had been a lifelong Fairfield resident. He was a graduate of Andrew Warde High School, Class of 1962. Tom served in the Army National Guard and worked various jobs until joining the Fairfield Fire Department, retiring in 1995 after nearly thirty years of service. Never one to stay idle, he worked numerous part-time jobs while a fire fighter including Tunxis Hill Hardware, Hemlock Hardware and as a bartender and custodian at the Gaelic American Club. He was also a bus driver for the Fairfield Board of Education. In high school, Tom was involved in the Drama Club and returned to building sets during and after his son TJ was there thirty years later. He enjoyed traveling, especially with the Staff Association at Fairfield University. Tom’s greatest joy was providing for his family and spending time with his loved ones. He will be sadly missed by his wife, Frances of Fairfield; his son, TJ Murphy of Bridgeport; his sister, Nancy Griffith of Gordonville, TX; a niece and a nephew. He was predeceased by his beloved daughter, Maura Murphy. The family wishes to thank the caring cardiovascular team at Yale New Haven Hospital. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, October 17 at 1pm at St. Pius X Church. 834 Brookside Drive, Fairfield. Interment will be private at Oak Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, friends may consider a donation in Tom’s memory to Yale New Haven Hospital’s Heart Transplant Fund.
