Ronald “Ron” Eugene Ferguson, a man deeply committed to his faith, family, and friends, passed away peacefully in Fairfield, Connecticut, on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, at the age of 83. Known for his endearing interest in the lives of others, Ron leaves behind a legacy of intellectual curiosity, professional excellence, and unwavering devotion.
Born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, Ron was the beloved son of William and Betty Ferguson. From an early age, he demonstrated a profound love for learning, a characteristic that would define his entire life. An academic at heart, Ron earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Blackburn College before pursuing a Master of Actuarial Science at the University of Michigan. His sharp mind and dedication propelled him to a distinguished career, culminating in many years as the Chief Executive Officer of General Re Corporation, and provided leadership as a board member for several public companies and organizations. Under his leadership, General Re thrived, a testament to his strategic vision and keen intellect.
Upon his retirement, Ron's passion for knowledge continued to shine intensely. He enhanced his academic and spiritual journey, earning a Master of Divinity degree from Asbury Theological Seminary.
Ron shared a remarkable 60-year marriage with his beloved wife, Carol Ferguson. This was his most treasured accomplishment. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and shared experiences, residing in Bonita Springs, Florida and previously in Fairfield, Connecticut. Their enduring partnership was a cornerstone of Ron's life.
Ron is survived by his devoted wife, their two children, grandchildren, and extended family: Brian Ferguson and his wife Cathy of Boston, MA, and Kristin Wackerman and her husband James of Fairfield, CT. He was also a cherished grandfather to six beautiful grandchildren: Lindsey Ferguson and her wife Rachael, William Ferguson, Ben Ferguson, Clay Wackerman, Connor Wackerman, and Kailey Wackerman. He leaves behind three loving sisters: Linda Schroeder, Dianne Harris, and June Franzen and her husband David, along with many nieces and nephews who will dearly miss his presence. Ron’s genuine warmth and interest in everyone he met created lasting bonds that will be remembered fondly.
A funeral service to celebrate Ron's life will be held on Friday, July 11, 2025, at 10:00 AM at the Greenfield Hill Congregational Church, 1045 Old Academy Rd. in Fairfield, Connecticut 06824. All who knew and loved Ron are welcome to attend and honor his memory.
The service will be followed by a Celebration of Life at The Patterson Club, 1118 Cross Highway, Fairfield CT, at 11:30 a.m.
