Nonnye Louise Landers Wheeler, 89, of Southport, passed away peacefully on May 4, 2026 surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Clifton Springs, New York to Dr. Phillip H. Landers and Margaret Moore Landers. She was the consummate eldest daughter, who excelled in school and worked hard her entire life. She graduated from Skidmore College and had a robust career in business administration. She was a trailblazer for women in the business world working for the Rockefeller Foundation in NYC, and later in the Business and Development office at SUNY Binghamton in the early 1970’s. She continued to work throughout her life, managing the Wilmot Wheeler Foundation and various family enterprises, only starting to say she was going to retire a month before her passing.
In 1974, Nonnye married the love of her life, Wilmot F. Wheeler, Jr., and became an avid tennis player, skier and world traveler with him. Their life together in Southport as members of The Country Club of Fairfield and Pequot Yacht Club was filled with wonderful friends, family, and a love and commitment to their community.
Nonnye is survived by Wilmot F. Wheeler, III (Wanda), James A. Wheeler (Karen), Susan C. Wheeler (Chris), Tracy Wheeler Lennon (Patrick) and Alexa M. Wheeler (Fiancé William), twelve grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, her two brothers John Landers (Linda) and Dr. Charles Landers (Lu), and numerous nieces and nephews and their children.
A memorial service celebrating Nonnye's life will be held on Saturday, June 20, 2026 at 11:00am at Trinity Episcopal Church, 651 Pequot Avenue, Southport.
