Marjorie “Marge” Josephine (Backlin) Erskine passed away on July 22, 2025 at the age of 92.
She was born on April 21, 1933 to Oscar and Astrid Backlin, in Warren, MN. She attended a one room schoolhouse about 1 ½ miles from her home until high school. The schoolhouse still stands today. She attended Warren High School and graduated in May of 1951. She attended Nursing School at Northwestern Hospital School of Nursing in Minneapolis and graduated in May of 1954 with a degree in Registered Nursing. She immediately started work as an RN at Saint Andrew’s Hospital as an operating room nurse.
Marge married Bob Erskine on September 3, 1955 in a ceremony at First Lutheran Church in Warren, MN. She moved with Bob to Minneapolis after that as Bob finished his college education at the University of Minnesota.
When Bob graduated from college in 1956 with a Master’s degree in engineering, he started work at General Electric. As a new engineer, he participated in several training programs which required that Marge quit her job as a nurse so that they could move to various states during his training. They lived in Milwaukee, WI, Louisville, KY, Niles, OH and Schenectady, NY. During this time, they welcomed three children, all of whom were born in Milwaukee: Kim was born in 1956, Keith in 1959, and Sandy in 1961. They moved to Fairfield, CT in 1965 where Bob started work in the corporate headquarters for GE until his retirement.
As the kids became older Marge worked as a nurse and also for Congressman Stewart McKinney. She was active in Our Saviors’ Lutheran Church in Fairfield where she participated in choir, the Altar Guild, and with the meal program for those in need in conjunction with other local churches.
Marge was preceded in death by her husband, Bob, and daughter, Kim. She is survived by her son Keith and his family, her daughter Sandy and her family, and Kim’s family. She had nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Burial will be private. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 13, 2026 at 11am at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, 160 Hill Farm Road, Fairfield CT 06824.
