John Buda Sr.

John Buda Sr. age 92 passed away on Tuesday May 5th 2026 under hospice care. John was born on March 7, 1934 in Lonya, Hungary to the late John and Elisabeth Buda. John was in the Hungarian Army during the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 and stationed at Hegeyeshlom.

He patrolled the border between Hungary and Austria as the Soviet army tanks were attempting to close the border. John fled to Austria and survived in a refugee camp until he was sponsored by the Calvin United Church of Christ members for arrival at Camp Kilmore, New Jersey. John was very proud to become an American citizen and was a resident of Fairfield, Connecticut for 67 years. John retired from the Town of Fairfield,Connecticut Department of Public Works. Also over the years he worked for Heppenstall Forge Co, Handy and Harman LTD, and did local construction work. He was an incredibly hard worker and was sincere in his responsibility and duties as a loving father.

During John’s younger years he played soccer in Hungary and then in the USA. He played on the Hungarian soccer team and often played at Seaside Park in Bridgeport Ct. Also he was an avid card player and accomplished dancer and enjoyed numerous Hungarian church dances. John’s passion was gardening around his home and often people would stop to admire his perennial garden flowers, and vegetables. John loved talking to anyone and giving advice with his experienced perfected growing techniques. He was always willing to help and share his knowledge.

John is survived by two children, his daughter Debbie, and his son John jr, and sister Etelka. He was predeceased by his son Frank in 2025, sister Elisabeth, and goddaughter Ilnoka.

The family would like to thank the entire staff at Complete Care of Meriden Ct. especially Jessy & Betsy for their excellent care during John’s elderly residence. John often surprised them with his ability to walk the halls and visit the kitchen for snacks.

A graveside prayer service will be held for John and his son Frank who will be interred with him at the Lawncroft Cemetery 1740 Black Rock Tnpk. Fairfield, Ct. on : Wednesday May 20th 2026 at 11:00 am.
