George Boyd Tyler, Jr., 103, passed away peacefully on January 30, 2026. Born in Vallejo, CA on February 10, 1922, he was the beloved son of the late George Boyd Tyler, Sr. and Viola Antoinette Boyer Tyler.
Known for fearlessly driving his family to move cross-country at the ripe old age of 12, making a mouthwatering (but tad bit spicy) Portuguese Kale Soup, his kindness and his storytelling, Mr. Tyler was a graduate of the University of Virginia and a true Virginian at heart. He proudly served as an Army medic on Okinawa during World War II and in 1954, he began a distinguished 37-year career as an engineer at Sikorsky Aircraft. He moved to Monroe that same year and was deeply involved in his community as a long-time resident, notably serving as Republican Campaign Chairman in the late 1960s.
A world-traveler, avid fly fisherman and talented published writer and photographer, his work was featured in Fairfield County Magazine, the Bridgeport Post, The Hour, and the Minuteman. In retirement, Mr. Tyler was an ardent golfer who won multiple club championships with the Tashua Knolls Seniors and Fairfield Senior Golf Association.
Predeceased by wives, Betty Sessler Tyler and Patricia Abraham Tyler, and sisters, Betty Guerry, Lucy Liebenow and Ann Settle, Mr. Tyler will be dearly missed and is survived by a sister, Harriet McDonnell of Binghamton, N.Y., 12 nieces and nephews, five stepchildren, and many other cherished family members and friends.
While it’s nearly impossible to distill his 103 years of life into a single syllable, multifaceted truly captures the spirit of a man who was just as comfortable in a cockpit or an engineering lab as he was in a kitchen, a trout stream or on a deserted white sand beach.
