Daniel H. Gombos, Sr. (affectionately referred to as 3G by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren), age 101, of Woodbury, formerly of Fairfield, beloved husband of the late Bertha Sansonetti Gombos, passed away Tuesday evening, February 3, 2026 at Waterbury Hospital following a short illness. Born in Westport, the son of the late John and Elizabeth Gombos, he had been a lifelong resident. As a young man, his first job was setting up bowling pins at the Calvin United Church of Christ. Following Pearl Harbor, Daniel enlisted in the United States Army serving in Headquarters Company, 193rd Tank Battalion during WW II in the Pacific Theater and participated in the battle of Okinawa. Following the War, Daniel returned home and began a long and rewarding career at the Bullard Company until his retirement. He was a member for over 37 years of American Legion Post 143 in Fairfield and was recognized by the American Legion on his 100th birthday. Daniel loved to bowl and play horseshoes, but above all else, delighted in time spent with his family. He will be sadly missed by two beloved sons, Daniel H. Gombos, Jr. and his wife Cathy of Venice, FL and Ronald T. Gombos and his wife Lisa of Woodbury; seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren a brother-in-law Andimo Rossi, of FL and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by four brothers and sisters. Friends may greet the family Monday, February 9, 2026 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the Spear-Miller Funeral Home, 39 South Benson Road, Fairfield. A funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m. with the Rev. Gaylord Lemke officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in Lawncroft Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, friends may consider a donation in Daniel’s memory to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, 2361 Hylan Blvd, Staten Island, NY 10306 (T2T.org).
