Barbara Bowman Boston, age 84, of Milford, formerly of Fairfield, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on June 26, 2026. She was the wife of the late James W. Boston. Born on January 14, 1942 in Pittsburgh, PA, she was the daughter of the late James and Alice Kennedy Bowman. Barbara was a resident of Fairfield, Connecticut for 52 years and spent the last 9 years in Milford, Connecticut.
Barbara was proud of being a Registered Nurse. She graduated from nursing school in 1963 and worked in virtually every facet of nursing during her career prior to retiring at the age of 75. Her nursing career included pediatrics, visiting nursing/homecare, labor and delivery at Greenwich Hospital and Norwalk Hospital and eventually serving as a school nurse in the city of Bridgeport for many decades. While raising a young family, she was devoted to her community at First Church Congregational of Fairfield, where she was the Director of Christian Education and a volunteer leader for youth groups with her husband. She also worked as the nurse at Silver Lake Conference Center for two summers.
Barbara’s greatest joy was her family. Barbara is survived by her daughters; Heather Boston Garbacik and husband Edward of Ludlow MA, Sarah Boston Barker and husband Alex of Arlington MA, Rebecca Boston Dowd of Fairfield CT and son in law Robert Routhier of Fairfield CT. In addition to her parents and husband she was predeceased by her daughter Holly Boston Routhier and son in law Jim Dowd. She also leaves her Baker’s Dozen of grandchildren; Zachary and Morgan Garbacik, Kevin and Kristen Garbacik, Kate Garbacik, Jacob Routhier, Samuel and Lauren Routhier, Elliot Routhier, Olivia Routhier, Evan Barker, Lily Barker, Ella Barker, Aidan Dowd, Emily Dowd and Brian Dowd. Barbara was especially proud to be a great grandmother to Reese Garbacik. She will also be remembered by her brother, James Bowman of Kalamazoo MI and sister in law, Jean Boston Fullen of New York NY.
A memorial service will be held on Monday July 13 at 12:00 PM at First Church Congregational 148 Beach Rd., Fairfield, CT . In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Barbara’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at stjude.org.
